When the eightfold path is presented in 3 subgroups, it is traditionally introduced as "virtue, meditation, wisdom" (virtue = action, speech, livelihood; meditation = effort, concentration, mindfulness; wisdom = view, intention)… and it is explained that the virtuous or ethical life serves as the wholesome foundation for a successful practice of meditation…

It is doubtful that meditation without changing practical aspects of one's life leads to much benefit. A bit of calm is not to be criticised, but insights are meant to unfold into practical changes, practical renunciations, practical cultivations… Without the unfolding, the path is aborted right after its inception by the insight.
